Superintendent's Message

Denise Yonts

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year.  I’m so pleased to have the incredible opportunity to serve you in the role of Superintendent.

I have served this district and our students in many different roles.  I began my career as an Instructional Assistant at WWE, working with special education students and Kindergarteners.  Then, I taught high school English at Whitesburg High School before becoming an Assistant Principal and Principal there.  Following consolidation, I was an Assistant Principal at LCCHS, and then served as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for our district.  Each position has been a blessing and learning experience for me, so to kick off the 2019-20 school year as your leader is an incredible opportunity to continue to work on behalf of the children of Letcher County.

Let’s reflect upon last year:  2018-19 was an amazing time for LCPS. The scores we received last fall reflect the 2017-18 school year.  Over 50% of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders scored proficient or distinguished.  6th Graders surpassed the state average in reading and math.  7th graders surpassed the state average in reading, math, and science.  8th graders surpassed the state in reading (over 12 points), social studies, and writing.  Our high school surpassed the state average in reading and writing (11th graders).  Our transition rate 77.8%, while the state was 60.9%.  Our high school graduation rate is 97.9.  Our success speaks to the caliber of students, teachers, principals, bus drivers, cooks, instructional assistants, maintenance staff, custodians, and the caliber of our Board of Education.

I have spent a great deal of time in each of our schools, visiting classrooms, talking with staff and students.  The dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm that I am met with makes me proud to be a part of this district.  Every day our staff goes above and beyond to take care of children, removing obstacles and working together to provide our students with the best instruction, cleanest buildings, hot meals, safe campuses, and then delivers them home safely.  Now we have the incredible opportunity to continue that work on behalf of the children of Letcher County to make the 2019-2020 school year the best.

  • We have the incredible opportunity to set high academic standards for all students.  All students deserve access to a challenging rigorous curriculum.
  • We have the incredible opportunity to provide a safe nurturing environment, where staff and students bring out the best in each other.
  • We have an incredible opportunity to make sound, responsible fiscal decisions.  We will use our resources wisely and build capacity in order to meet future demands for our students.
  • We have an incredible opportunity to engage with our community and families, working together to provide programs and services for all children.

As our preschool students and kindergarteners enter our doors with the hopes and dreams of their parents and our seniors return with enthusiasm and visions of their futures, we have an incredible opportunity to work on behalf of our children to make all their dreams come true. We will work to make the 2019-20 school year the best yet. We will work to increase the number of proficient and distinguished students, to surpass the state in all academic areas, and to graduate 100% of our students college or career ready.  Our students are bright, creative, and talented.  We are ready for this challenge!
