Tomorrow, testing will begin for grades 3-5 and we can’t wait to see our cardinals try their very best to show just how much they’ve learned and grown this year!
Parents and guardians, you’ve been such a great support to us this year! We’re asking you help make sure our students are set up for success this year by:
Making sure your student gets a good night’s rest.
Making sure your student has a protein-rich breakfast.
Making sure your student is at school on-time.
We know our students are SO much more than a test score, but we want them to have the best opportunity to show what they know and how amazing our school is!
Martha Jane Potter Elementary will host a Family STEM Night tonight, Tuesday May 6, from 5:00-7:00. There will be hands-on learning activities, a petting zoo, and snacks. We hope to see you there!
We are excited to inform you that Letcher County Public Schools will be offering an enrichment camp this summer at West Whitesburg Elementary for students who are currently enrolled in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. The camp will run from June 2-June 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily. The enrollment form is on the Letcher County Public Schools Facebook page, however, if you don’t have access to Facebook, you can call your child’s school or Central Office and someone will assist you in filling out the form.
We would like to remind all parents and students that the extended day schedules for all schools begin tomorrow, April 7th. If you have any questions, please contact your child's school on Monday.
Beginning tomorrow we will dismiss at 3:13 PM instead of 2:45 PM. Also, we will be completing MAP testing the next two days. Please try to make sure your child attends and brings a charged Chromebook.
The Letcher County Schools will operate on a one hour delay for Monday, March 31, 2025.
The Letcher County Schools will be closed for Thursday, March 6, 2025 due to icy road conditions.
Our annual Book Blast kicked off today! Students should bring home a treasure map with all the details. Every student that sends invitations to 10 friends or family members will receive a prize pack--no purchase necessary!
Bus 2322, Mike Strand, and Bus 815, Beth Terry, will be late this morning, Wednesday, March 5th, due to debris and road conditions.
The Letcher County Schools will operate on a regular schedule for Wednesday, February 26th. Unfortunately, there are several roads that we can’t travel with buses and ask that our parents work with us to meet the buses at a central location. The list of alternate routes is located at https://5il.co/38nbl or by searching for alternate routes on the Letcher County Schools website. We will continue to work with our city, county, and state officials on needed repairs. As roads are repaired, we will return to our regular routes. Thanks in advance for your patience as we keep our students safe.
Good evening, MJP families! We are glad to be coming back to school tomorrow, Tuesday morning, on a one-hour delay. Please remember that means the building will not open for students to begin entering until 8:15. The book fair will be open as we kick off our school's observance of Read Across America week and if your child wants to participate, tomorrow's dress-up day is Turtle Tuesday. Students may wear anything green they already have in honor of the book "Yertle the Turtle."

Free meals will be served at West Whitesburg Elementary for children ages 1-18 on Monday, February 24, 2025 from 11:30 am to 1:30 PM.
The Letcher County Schools will be closed on Monday, February 24, 2025. Now that most of the snow is gone, we can better assess road conditions to ensure bus routes are safe. We will continue to work with county and state officials to get our students back to school as soon as possible.
Meals will be available for pick up today at West Whitesburg Elementary from 11:30AM till 1:30 PM for children ages 1-18 years old.
Letcher County Schools will be closed on Thursday, February 20, and Friday, February 21, 2025, due to inclement weather and road conditions. We hope our students, families, and staff are safe and warm. We will continue to work and monitor road conditions and update you on Sunday for next week. If you have needs, please reach out to school staff or contact our central office. We want to help in any way we can.
The Letcher County Schools will be serving free meals for children ages 1 to 18 at West Whitesburg Elementary on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Due to road conditions and the weather forecast, Letcher County Schools will be closed Tuesday, February 18, and Wednesday, February 19, 2025. We will reassess on Wednesday and keep you posted. We are so thankful for all the hard work going into repairs in our community. If you have needs, please reach out to your child’s FRYSC Coordinator or school Principal. Safety is our top priority, and we want to help where we can.

The Letcher County Schools will be closed on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 due to hazardous weather conditions, including heavy rains, rising creeks and streams, and debris in the roads.
